Kalki Koechlin is definitely different from the most mainstream and other ordinary actress

Kalki's French parents had come to India in the 1970s and afters settling here, Kalki was born in a small village in Pondicherry. Kalki's parents are devotees of Sri Aurobindo.

Kalki's great grandfather Maurice Koechlin was a Swiss structural engineer who contributed to the construction of the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

After studying in Ooty, Kalki wnt to Goldsmiths, University of London o study drama and theatre. She also got to work with a theatre company called Theatre of Relativity for almost two years.

Before becoming an actress Kalki had acted in various plays, including David Hare's 'The Blue Room,' Marivaux's 'The Dispute,' and a devised play called 'The Rise of the Wild Hunt'.

After completing her studies, Kalki shifted base to Mumbai to try her luck in Hindi films. During her initial days, she did a few modelling assignments for TV commercials.

Luck favoured Kalki when she was shortlisted for the role of Chandramukhi the 2009 film in Anurag Kashyap's critically acclaimed film Dev D (2009) that eventually marked her Bollywood debut too.

Interestingly, Kalki knew three languages including English, Tamil and French but she had to work hard on her Hindi diction to prepare for her debut role.



Though Kalki looked extremely confident in her debut performance in Dev D but not many would know that she had too many apprehensions about whether audiences would like her or not.
